Katherine Gorge Day Tour
Take our Katherine Gorge Day Tour and you’ll soon discover one of the treasures of Australia’s Northern Territory. Spanning almost 3,000 square kilometres, Nitmiluk National Park is a spectacular succession of cascading waterfalls and no less than 13 dramatic gorges. A nature and culture lover’s delight, keep a lookout for crocs and brightly coloured birds as you drift along the Katherine River. Explore the region’s importance to the Jawoyn people, or grab a chat with a resident ‘top ender’ while enjoying a tasty lunch.

Starting out from the centre of Darwin, you’ll head in air-conditioned comfort south along the Stuart Highway, following the route of nineteenth-century explorer John McDouall Stuart. Before reaching the multitude of natural delights within Nitmiluk National Park, you’ll first stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery. This is dedicated to the 423 identified casualties of Japanese attacks on Darwin during the Second World War.
Entering the national park, your guide will detail the long history and heritage of the Jawoyn people, the traditional Aboriginal landowners, while leading you towards examples of rock art thousands of years old. You’ll also have the chance to swim in the cooling pool at the base of Leliyn (Edith Falls) during the relative calm of the dry season – so don’t forget your swimming gear!
Having stopped for lunch amid spectacular scenery, you’ll have the chance to visit the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre, home to a fascinating collection of Aboriginal artefacts. Finally, you’ll step off solid ground and onto the gentle swell of the Katherine River. During a two-hour cruise, you’ll sail past basking crocs and spectacular birdlife to the towering walls of Katherine Gorge. Rising 70 metres over the river, they are a breathtaking sight whatever the time of year.
Once you’ve gazed at all of mother nature’s handy work, it will be time to return to Darwin along the Stuart Highway’s expansive vistas once more.
