With compressed sand perfect for sunset strolls and a neat border of palms, there’s a reason why Four Mile Beach is popular with photographers.
Four Mile Beach is iconic thanks to its post-card-perfect palms. Not a high rise or urban setting in sight, this sand curves softly around lazy waves. It’s a serene sight.
Perfect for those seeking a less busy version of Cairns, or for those looking for a stop-off on their way to the Daintree.
On its best day, the Queensland sun draws out the vivid tropical colours of Four Mile Beach. It’s a breathable beach that doesn’t feel too crowded, even at peak sunset times. During high tide, the wide berth of sand allows lots of room for activities. Palms fringe the sand, forming a soft curve. They hang lazily downwards, reminding beachgoers that life shouldn’t move too quickly in Port Douglas.
Water sports at Four Mile Beach
Four Mile Beach has plenty of space for watersports. A windy day provides fantastic kitesurfing conditions. On a calmer day, rent a stand-up paddle board and drift against a sky echoing the gentle colours of the sunset from the other side.
Walk the 4km curve of the beach
Contrary to its name, Four Mile Beach is 4 km long (this means it’s 2.5 miles long, but that doesn’t quite have the same ring to it).
Take yourself for a sunset stroll or catch the sunrise early. Share the beach with early-morning joggers, dog walkers, and pre-lunchtime beach walkers. Say hello to the morning and catch the sunrise early. Or, say goodbye to the day with a soft sunset stroll along the sand.
Swimming and sunbathing
Four Mile Beach is the perfect backdrop to your ultimate chill-out beach day. With sunloungers available nearby, all you need is your sunscreen and a good book. Or, fully submit to the beach vibes and fall asleep to the soft sound of waves lapping the shore.
The Surf Club nearby offers convenient access to showers and toilets for those wanting a rinse, post-swim.
Take a tip in the Coral Sea and cool off! Of course – remember stinger season is November-May, so if you’re planning on visiting during this time then protect yourself with a stinger suit. Always swim amongst the stinger nets. While it’s safe to swim in Four Mile Beach all year long, visitors are advised to check the beach conditions on that day.
Flagstaff Hill Lookout
For the best view of Four Mile Beach, take yourself to the Flagstaff Hill Lookout. It truly is the best view of the whole beach, and the broad view allows a great viewpoint of the entire beach. Expect postcard-worthy views: You can see Low Isles, Snapper Island and the vast mountain ranges that sit behind Port Douglas.
