    Hobart City Highlights

    1. MONA (Museum of Old and New Art): 35 minutes north of Hobart by ferry or road. Australia’s most visited private museum. Note: some exhibits have age restrictions
    2. Salamanca Market: every Saturday, 8am to 3pm. Fresh produce, crafts, and local food. The best market in Tasmania
    3. Battery Point: historic sandstone suburb adjacent to Salamanca, worth a slow walk
    4. Kunanyi/Mount Wellington: 21km from the city, 1271m summit with views over Hobart and the Derwent River. Can be cold and windy at the top year-round

    Best Time to Visit Hobart

Summer (December to February): longest days, warmest weather, Taste of Tasmania food festival (late December), and Sydney to Hobart yacht race arrival (early January). Very busy; book accommodation and tours ahead.

Autumn (March to May): mild, good light, fewer crowds. Good for photography.

Winter (June to August): cold and short days, but Dark Mofo (MONA’s winter festival in June) is worth visiting for. MONA’s installations work well in the dark.

Spring (September to November): wildflowers at Mount Field and around the Huon Valley, pleasant temperatures, building visitor numbers.
