Explore Kakadu National Park on a thrilling 4WD expedition!

Kakadu National Park expands across 20,000 square kilometres of the Northern Territory, meaning there is a lot to explore. This vast national park is only accessible with your own vehicle or on a tour. You won’t find a bus, train or taxi to bring you around the park.

Whether you explore on your own or join a tour, the best vehicle to bring is a 4WD. There are roads accessible by 2WD, but you’ll be able to see more with a 4WD vehicle!

Kakadu areas only accessible by 4WD

As we said, there is plenty that you can access if you only have a 2WD vehicle to explore. However, if you have a 4WD vehicle, there are some must-see attractions to check out.

  • Waterfalls

Two of Kakadu’s most popular waterfalls are only accessible by 4WD vehicle. Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls are an absolute must when visiting Kakadu. After you take your 4WD vehicle offroad, you will have to complete a short hike before reaching the waterfalls.

  • Plunge pool

One of Kakadu’s best swimming spots is the Maguk swimming hole. To access this stunning site, you will need to drive offroad in your 4WD and then take a short hike. Once you arrive at the swimming hole, you can take a refreshing dip and relax in the scenic surroundings!

  • Bush camping areas

Kakadu National Park has almost 30 campgrounds. These campsites range from caravan parks to remote campsites in the bush. If you are planning to go bush camping, you’ll need a 4WD to access the campsite.

  • Shortcuts

There are many wonderful paved roads weaving throughout Kakadu National Park, they just may lead you in a bit of a roundabout way. For example, if you want to take Old Jim Jim Road as a shortcut from Cooinda, you will need a 4WD vehicle.
