1. Go for an autumnal walk
There are heaps of different green spaces dotted around the city. The city’s parks change to a pretty shade of orangy-red during the autumn. Explore one of Melbourne’s many parks, grab a hot coffee and crunch the leaves under your feet. Or if you’d rather explore the urban jungle, take a wander through the city streets lined with Victorian architecture and splashes of vibrant leaves. Don’t forget your camera!

2. Watch the leaves change at Dandenong Ranges Botanical Gardens
The Dandenong Ranges Botanical Gardens are beautiful any time of the year, but they especially come alive during the autumn.
Their gorgeous leaves complement an autumn sky, presenting plenty of photo opportunities.
Explore these beautiful botanical gardens and go for a hike amongst the beautiful native trees.
3. Go ice skating
Is there anything more wintery than going ice skating in the autumn?
Layer up with jumpers, and get yourself out into the ice-skating rink. Check out the O’Brien’s Icehouse in Docklands. It’s a large rink, lit with funky colour-changing disco lights. Grab your mates and head out for a spin!
4. Go shopping
Cold weather is for finding a warm shop to hibernate in, and browse around! There are heaps of options for shopping in Melbourne. For large department stores, head to Melbourne Central in the CBD. Bourke Street Mall and Emporium are other great central shopping options.
5. Festivals and events in the autumn
Go and explore the events and festivals in Melbourne this autumn!
There are tons of events and things to go to in Melbourne every autumn. Get yourself immersed in plenty of Melbourne culture – there are endless events which happen all year round.
Check out the food and wine festival, the International Comedy Festival, and film festivals.
With so many different things going on, you won’t be stuck on things to do around Melbourne – any day of the week!
6. Eat at the Queen Victoria markets
Savour a taste of Autumn with the Vic markets. Munch on something warm in the cold autumnal crispness, and take a wander around the stalls. Listen to the sizzle of hot food being cooked on a cold night, and smell the aromas of global cuisine fill the bustling markets.
Sip on a mulled wine and stroll around the vibrant markets. Browse through the many trinket stalls. The Vic Markets are the biggest in Melbourne, so there’s plenty of food and drink to suit your taste!
7. Go and see some footy
Autumn means… it’s footy season! There’s plenty of opportunity to go and see a football match in Melbourne.
You’ll see the footy at the MGV in Richmond. The AFL is one of the most famous sporting events in the country. People flock from all over the country (and the world) to see the AFL games live at the stadium. 18 teams compete every year, and Carlton, Essendon and Collingwood have the most titles currently.
Hype up for some friendly rivalry, and watch your favourite players compete against one another. The season runs from March to September each year, so make sure you get yourself tickets to a match!
8. Go out for a bite to eat
Melbourne’s laneway bars and restaurants become that extra little bit cosier during the autumn! Check out some cafes on Degraves Lane for a small cosy cafe that packs a warm punch. Or sip mulled wine in an underground pub.
Check out the annual food and wine festival! Food and wine are a very big deal in Melbourne, so experiencing the food festival will allow you to sample a bit of everything! Pop ups happen all over the city.
9. See an exhibition
Escape the cold and check out an exhibition at the NGV. There is always something on at the NGV – or go and explore the free exhibitions that are displayed in the Melbourne Museum. Couple it with a walk around the Carlton Gardens right next to it, and you’ve got yourself a perfect autumnal day!
