Thredbo
Thredbo is a magical winter wonderland! The Snowy Mountains of New South Wales are famous for their ski resorts, and Thredbo is home to the longest ski run in Australia.
Thredbo has some amazing slopes and fantastic trails for mountain biking. The famous Koscuisko National Park is about a 7-hour drive from Sydney. It’s the perfect snow spot if you’re looking for a wintery oasis outside of the city.
It’s got the highest gradient slope in Australia, and fantastic learning programmes.
So check out the steepest vertical drop in Australia. Choose from luxury accommodation to hostels – there are accommodation options to suit every budget. Plus, Thredbo Snow Village doesn’t sleep at night… With live music and DJS filling the local bars, the hospitality venues open until the wee hours, meaning you can party after your snow day!
Mount Buller
Say hello to Melbourne’s closest ski resort, Mount Buller. Mount Buller is full of fun, snow-filled family activities for the entire family. It’s often nicknamed ‘Melbourne’s Playground.’ With over 300 hectares of skiable terrain, there’s plenty of fun runs at Mount Buller. If the snow isn’t ‘snowy’ enough that day, then toboggan down the hills, or snowshoe your way around the pretty hiking trails. With over 30 different bars and restaurants in the Alpine Village, you won’t be short on places to go and sip on something warm after your day on the slopes!
Mount Hotham
Mount Hotham is in Victoria’s High Country. It’s not too far from Thredbo, and snow bums label it Australia’s ‘powder capital.’ The resort has a drop of 396 metres, which makes for a fun run! There are some great cross-country ski trails here. There’s even a husky trailing here! It’s only a 4.5-hour drive from Melbourne, so it’s a great spot to go to the Victorian Alps if you’re a seasoned skier, especially. It’s classed as a beginner slope, which offers a whole range of different options. It’s also Victoria’s powder capital with over 13 different chair lifts. With 3 terrain parks and cross-country skiing resorts, there are so many different spots for beginners and pros alike.
Falls Creek
Falls Creek is probably the most underrated resort out of all of the ski destinations in Australia. With over 450 hectares of skiable terrain, there are heaps of runs for both beginners and intermediates alike. Compared to the other snow resorts in the country, it has more of a family atmosphere. 80% of runs are suited for the beginner levels.
Hospitality-wise, there are so many bars and restaurants that you can go and drop in for a quick drink or bite to eat. When you’re done on the slopes, treat your muscles to a massage at the spa. There are plenty of hiking spots around the resort, too. Plus, the ski village is pedestrian only, perfectly moulded to its family atmosphere. It’s a 5-hour drive from Melbourne, which means it’s slightly less busy than its cousin, Mount Buller, which is closer to the city.
