Kuranda Skyrail & Scenic Rail Experience Itinerary
Following pick up from your hotel in central Cairns, you’ll be gliding over the UNESCO World Heritage-listed tree canopy on the 7.5-kilometre Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. From its two intermediate stations there’s the opportunity to head onto the boardwalks of the forest floor, and take in another glimpse of Barron Falls from the glass floor of The Edge Lookout.
You will then be escorted by your driver and guide to Freshwater Station, where the vintage train carriages of the Kuranda Scenic Railway await. Heading north, you’ll parallel the route of the Barron River northward, with every minute of the two-hour journey offering something new. Protected by Barron Gorge National Park, you’ll pass several stunning cascades along the way. After a stop to absorb the full magnificence of Barron Falls, you’ll arrive in Kuranda.
First settled by Europeans in 1885, Kuranda has a series of fascinating relics from the making of modern Australia. These include the tiny St Saviour’s Church, and the wreck of a Japanese bomber which crashed during the Second World War. Both are well worth seeking out having explored the stalls of the daily heritage market. Approximately 3.5 hours of free time in this town of 3,000 also gives you the chance to visit the lovable inhabitants of Kuranda Koala Gardens, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, or Birdworld.
After taking in amazing scenery from an array of different viewpoints, you will head back to Cairns to conclude your day.
