Katherine sits at the point where the stark Australian outback meets the lush tropics. With a landscape studded with mystical waterfalls, soaring gorges, relaxing thermal springs, and a hearty dose of ancient culture, it’s the place to go if you really want to peel back the layers of the Northern Territory.

Katherine itself is a fairly large town perched on the pretty banks of the Katherine River. With around 8,000 people that call it home, it offers an intimate way to get to know the region. For the most part, visitors flock to Katherine from nearby Alice Springs, but the Nitmiluk National Park (also known as the Katherine Gorge) provides some spectacular sights, too.

Filled with vibrant plant species, an eclectic selection of native Australian wildlife, and a beautiful collection of natural scenery, the park is perfect for outdoor lovers, while Katherine itself provides the best base from which to explore it from.
