Day 1: Darwin to Kakadu National Park (Lunch & Dinner)
Travelling east by 4WD from Darwin, your meeting with the wilds of Kakadu National Park is only moments away. But before you get there, you’ll have the chance to spot this region’s wildlife from birds to…crocs!
The Bowali Visitor Centre will provide the lowdown on why the area became a hotbed of Aboriginal rock art, as you’ll see later at Ubirr. In the meantime, you’ll pass within metres of giant crocs at Cahill’s Crossing on the East Alligator River, on the border between Kakadu and Arnhem Land.
The day ends with a visit to Ubirr Rock to see an array of Aboriginal Rock Art and then a stunning sunset from a vantage point over the Nadab Floodplain. Finally, we’ll enjoy a night surrounded by the sounds of the national park at Jabiru.
Day 2: Jim Jim to Jabiru (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
Day 2 begins as we journey south into Kakadu National Park. You will have plenty of time to enjoy the natural beauty surrounding you. Embark on a hike through the monsoon rainforests, swim in the pristine plunge pools, and splash in the cascading waterfalls!
In the afternoon, you can spend time amidst the vast canopy of trees with a short hike to either Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls, Motor Car Falls or Moline Rockhole. The decision on exactly which to visit will be made depending on the season and other factors.
Before returning for a second night at Jabiru you’ll be taken to Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre for a greater understanding of the culture and the management of this vast wilderness.
Day 3: Kakadu to Katherine (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
We will spend the morning exploring Kunwarddewardde and Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) Rock. If the name is new to you, this is the location of a second major site of ancient rock art, also known as the Anabangbang Gallery.
After a journey south along another 4WD track, you’ll get to enjoy a picnic lunch beside the irresistible waters of Maguk Waterfall’s natural plunge pool. This is one of the most picturesque waterfalls in Kakadu National Park.
The afternoon will be spent hiking and swimming, enjoying the natural surroundings. We will then continue on to our campsite in Katherine. Here, you can unwind beneath the stars beside the crackling sounds of the campfire.
Day 4: Katherine to Nitmiluk National Park (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
We begin the day bright and early with a departure to Nitmiluk National Park. Enjoy a 2-hour boat cruise as you glide along the water, between the 70 metres of sheer rock cliffs on both sides of you. You can also choose to board a helicopter ride (own cost) or take a short hike to admire the stunning views.
We’ll then head to Edith Falls which offers the chance for a swim in the series of cascading waterfalls and refreshing rock pools.
After a delightful picnic lunch and some time in the water, we’ll back to our Katherine campsite.
Day 5: Katherine to Litchfield National Park (Breakfast & Lunch)
Although it only gained national park status in 1986, Litchfield still manages to cast a spell on those who make an effort to visit. A treasure trove of natural wonders, its dense tropical jungle slowly reveals all manner of hidden gems.
View the giant magnetic termite mounds nearby, as well as a number of beautiful tumbling waterfalls and plunge pools such. Enjoy a dip at either Buley Rockholes or Wangi Falls and visit either Florence Falls or Tolmer Falls.
After another adventurous day, your journey around the Top End will conclude by travelling back to Darwin on the famous Stuart Highway.
Note: Due to the nature of the Top End, our Kakadu tour itineraries are subject to change and therefore the itinerary may be slightly different when you travel.
